And the End of DS106

It has been a wild ride, but I survived. Miraculously, so did my relationships with both Meg and Dina. From making visuals and designs to recording audio and video, I have journeyed to becoming a more competent designer in many disciplines. I have also expanded my ability to tell stories, through words and through the above medias. Along the way I have also stopped using two spaces between sentences; thanks design week.

Kind of Fun

Working with photography was enjoyable; I got to practice taking pictures using different techniques to induce different emotions in my viewers. However, my most gratifying picture (never before posted) was not taken deliberately and certainly was not intended to follow any rules.

I ended up capturing this shot by leaving my wide-angle lens attached to my iPhone while trying to take a picture with the flash on. The flash was inside the area of the inner lens, so it just bounced off and right back into the camera. I find it looks like some kind of eerie space picture.

Super Useful, and Really Fun

Design week was by far the most useful section of this class for me. Making advertisements and editing old photos hit the spot. In addition, the last assignment I completed for design was also the beginning of the Steam World story. Also, I learned about some excellent resources for aiding in design. Since that week, I have used Unsplash and Pixabay non-stop for finding great free photos. For picking out colors in my designs I utilized both Kuler, the Adobe color-scheme visualizer, and Color Palette Generator. It was not until this week that I used The Noun Project for finding icons to use in designs; I am glad that I remembered that service.

Bizarre and Pleasing

While the work done for audio week was at times completely bananas, other times it was on point. The Midi Trails assignment was a personal letdown in comparison to submissions by other bloggers but was still an accomplishment for its tedious nature. Setting up the audio on my mac to be able to make my YouTube video for it was obnoxious, but the Soundflower driver required proved useful in tutorials that I made for later assignments.  The only part of that assignment that really excited me was the story behind it, which followed the Steam World story I had begun previously. The other two assignments I completed also followed Steam World in Detroit, which I brought to an end this week for the final project.

Oh my God Editing

Working with video was tough. While recording video does not take much time, the editing afterward is a huge time-sink. Not only that, but videos also take up huge amounts of space on a hard drive. The final tutorial I recorded was eleven gigabytes; that is large. Needless to say, I will be dumping my videos (as well as most other parts of my work from this semester) into cold storage once the class finally ends.

My experience with videography came in handy for my final project as well though. I finally got to use the green room, which I had wanted to do for video week, but it worked out better that I had to wait.

The Sun has set on my Daily Creating

My final DCs began Monday with a lovely picture of Meg and Me enjoying a sunset at Belvedere Plantation in Fredericksburg, VA.

Wednesday’s kept it hot, with a creative, albeit more difficult to read, quote from Steve Jobs superimposed onto my MacBook Pro’s touch bar.

I ended strong on Thursday with a little bit of symmetry art.

I left comments on The Story of Mickey, The Aqueous Killer, and A trip to Remember. By the end though, I was really missing links to the creators’ other blog posts.

 

The Final Project

Warning: some of the themes in my final project are PG-13, and there is some profanity. This was unavoidable due to the entire concept of my story and the nature of some of the characters I had to portray.

I will have all the posts with the parts of my final project embedded later, but I want you the viewer to experience my final project as one big blend of audio, photography, dramatic reading, design, and videography in the form of a partially narrated video. By doing so, you will be able to experience the story in chronological order, whereas the posts jump around in the story, since I created the different parts when most convenient.

A Story in Pieces

Lean Mean Green Screen

First Contact

For the video portion of the final project, I chose to record a terror-hostage-style ransom-video of fictional Hollis. Here he delivers ANTISA’s demands to the camera. To record this video, I have used the green screen at the HCC so that I can make my own custom background for the shot including the ANTISA banner design from the design portion. I have left my assistant unnamed; I worry that YouTube will flag my post for removal, and I don’t want that to affect her in any way.

Never Gets Better Does It?

“Get up!” shouted a figure from the door as it swung open. “It’s time to make yourself useful.” Hollis blinked wearily at the bright light flooding the cramped room he had been locked in. “I said get up!” the figure growled again. This must have been ‘Boss,’ as the other ANTISA members called her. The woman was small in stature but held an angry, malicious air about her. Her face wrinkled in fury at Hollis’s lack of movement from the corner of the room. “Bring him to the camera room!” she bellowed down the hall. “If he has to come in pieces that’s his choice!”

Hands tied, Hollis was shoved onto the floor in front of a large ANTISA banner with a camera pointing at it. Will this ever end, he thought to himself.

The Bad and the Good

I Bring You Design

Following the audio of Hollis with his kidnappers, I chose to create the design elements for my final project. There were two images that I wanted to create: one to advertise ANTISA and one to urge people to report sightings of ANTISA to the FBI.

Also, it is really late, but thank goodness the HCC is open twenty-four-seven. I have been coming here lately instead of Sheetz since the Wi-Fi is much better. The place is practically barren in the summer, so I suppose I am keeping it company.

The Bad

In the wake of the Detroit steam-plant bombing, ANTISA banners began appearing all over the nation. The domestic terror-group had made its first major strike and had begun aggressively recruiting. With their motto, “End the pollution, save the planet,” being spread under the guise environmentalism, once normal protestors were joining the group seeking to be a part of the movement. Though the main-stream media extensively covered the catastrophe in Michigan, most Americans were getting their news from Facebook and other online sources which failed to depict the horrors that had occurred and the devastation to the Detroit community. An emergency order by the FBI directed law-enforcement nation-wide to document the location of and remove any ANTISA banners found and to arrest the person(s) hanging said banners if possible.

The Good

Spearheaded by Meg Pultz, a movement began to spread awareness about the evil of ANTISA. After speaking at a memorial to those lost at the plant bombing, she organized others in her community to begin posting anti-ANTISA posters around the state. Support flooded to Meg for her efforts, and soon steam-workers and their families around the country began doing likewise. The posters were simple, encouraging people to stick together and to report any suspected ANTISA activity to FBI via the new hotline that had been implemented.

Steam World Revisited

Starting Off

For the final project, I finally get my chance to continue the Steam World saga and let you, the viewers, find out fictional Hollis’s fate. The story opens with audio of Hollis after the attack by ANTISA on the Detroit steam-plant.

Part One: Audio

Hollis only felt his eyes open. Though the lids parted, he only saw darkness. He blinked madly, fearing that he had been blinded, until he realized that the darkness was in front of his eyes, not in them. He could smell sweat and blood soaking his clothes, the dress polo he wore for employee picture day and the slacks Meg said made his butt look good. But that was not all his senses picked up. He could feel canvas wrapped about his head and see ripples in the dark where creases crossed the fabric. The sounds around him were muffled, but he thought he could make out the whine of an electric motor and the whooshing of air at a half open window. The last thing he remembered was running for the emergency exit when the lunch hall ceiling began falling. Where was he? Was he in a car? What happened?

“Damn it,” he thought, “I should have stayed home like Meg told me to.”
